In the movie, “A Stranger Among Us”, a rude police officer, Emily is forced to live in the Hasadic community in order for her to solve a murder. Emily discovers that the Hasadic Jews have high ethical and moral standards, unlike her. Everything that the Hasadic Jews do is for the Rebbe, he tells them how to live their lives. When Emily first enters the Jewish community, everyone stares at her because of the way she dresses. Jewish woman are supposed to wear long clothing with long sleeves, but emily was wearing a short skirt and a short sleeved blouse.
The Rebbe’s daughter quickly covered Emily with several shauls. Another Hasadic rule is that a man and a woman cannot be left alone in a room, Emily breaks this rule many times. When Yakoov’s family is at his funeral, the men cut the collar of their jackets, they cover the mirrors in their house, and the do not wear shoes. This is done because Yakoov’s family does not want to look wealthy because their son’s death has made them poor. The Rebbe’s son tells Emily a quote from the Kabbala “women are on a higher spiritual plane than men”. He explains that because women are more gentle than men, they have a more spiritual connection to the world. The Hasidic Jews have to use proper and dignified language at all times, they also have to dress properly. The men have “sidecurls” and long beards because they want to maintain their traditions. They also respect the Kabbala very much, since it is like their guide to living the way God intended them to. The bus that the Jews ride in separates the men an women by a curtain, when they dance, the women and men are also separated. The preparation of the food is very unique and sacred, the women pray before preparing food and they separate the meats from the dairy.
Emily is inspired be the unity and the feeling of family in the Jewish community that she visits her father and tries to reconnect with him; unfortunately, her father does not treat her like a father would treat his daughter. Every action that a Hasidic Jew is about to do, he/she has to say a prayer before it. The Hasidic Jews have different clothin, food, tradition, music, customs, rules, and standards than the rest of the world. They put family and God first and everything else comes after that.
